How to dispose of gas bottles and cylinders

Gas bottles are used by individuals and businesses for a range of purposes, with the most common uses including; BBQs, heating, camping, cooking and powering forklifts.

Once the gas bottle or cylinder is finished with and no longer of use, what do you need to do to ensure it’s disposed of correctly?

Although some are not hazardous, gas bottles are often termed as a ‘difficult waste’ to dispose of due to the substance contained in the bottles. So when it comes to disposing of any redundant bottles or cylinders we would encourage you to first see if the empty bottle can be used by anyone else. There is often a desire for bottles amongst campers and outdoor enthusiasts because an empty bottle can be used to purchase a full bottle at a heavily discounted rate.

What to do if disposal is the only option?

We can accept empty gas bottles and cylinders at our recycling centres in Dorset and Somerset. The disposal process is easy; simply drive on the weighbridge during our opening hours and make the operator aware of the number of bottles you have to dispose of. You will then be given clear direction on where to go to leave the waste.

Please note you will need a hard hat, high viz jacket and safety footwear to enter the site. We can loan out a hard hat and high viz jacket if you do not have them.

If I am bringing the waste in, what do I need to know?

Asbestos waste is hazardous and therefore any individual bringing it to Canford Recycling Centre must ensure the following actions are completed.

  • All wastes must be double wrapped or bagged using a strong, 1000+ gauge plastic that can be sealed and has no holes.
  • The waste must be pre-booked in at least one day before being brought to Canford Recycling Centre.
  • A hazardous waste consignment note must be partially completed to enable it to be finished and signed when the load is tipped. *A member of our team can start this process once the load is pre-booked over the phone.

Please note asbestos waste disposed of at Canford Recycling Centre must be manually offloaded on site. Therefore we strongly recommend sheets of asbestos are individually wrapped and sealed bags of asbestos weigh no more than 25kg each.

Where can I dispose my fluorescent tube lights?

Our fully licensed facilities in Dorset and Somerset allow individuals and businesses to dispose of their redundant fluorescent tube lights in a safe and fully compliant manner.

Can someone collect my broken or damaged fluorescent lights?

In short, yes. Please call 01202 331560 for hazardous waste collection prices.

As fluorescent lighting is typically used within schools, offices and commercial premises it can sometimes cause problems when redundant or damaged lights require transporting to one of our sites. To help elevate this issue we can provide a specialist fluorescent tube coffin, which can be filled or partly filled on site and then collected and removed at a convenient time by one of our licensed Hazardous waste collection operatives.

What are the costs associated with disposing of tube lights?

At Commercial Recycling, we can either charge for the disposal per tube light, or depending on how many you are disposing of, we charge per light coffin. For more details on our hazardous waste collection and disposal rates, please get in contact with our team on 01202 331560.
