A Day in the Life of Shaun | Commercial Recycling News

Day in the Life of… Shaun, our Commercial Manager

It has been a few months since we shared a new ‘day in the life’ article, and with new staff members joining the team, we thought it was only fair that we used this as an opportunity to introduce you to them properly.

Today, we would like you to meet Shaun, our new Commercial Manager.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your job?

I am a father of two boys, one is 4 years old and the other one is just 3 months old – that’s right, a new job and a new baby in one go, what was I thinking?

I have been working in the waste industry for around 14 years, starting off at Suez as a Customer Relations Manager, then moving over to Eco Food Recycling. There, we had about 2,000 bins of food waste being collected each week, with 13 trucks on the road, which I oversaw on a day-to-day basis. Before Commercial Recycling, I worked at Eco Sustainable Solutions as a Commercial Manager. In the four and a half years that I was there, I learnt a lot about waste organics along with energy production through anaerobic digestion and CHP.

At Commercial Recycling, I am responsible for the materials coming in and going out of the business, along with looking at how we can maximise our permit, working closely with our operations team. I also work closely with our disposal sites, to ensure we are maximising as much value from waste as possible.

This means that I am often out on what we call ‘duty of care’ visits, where I call on sites that we send our waste to ensure they are compliant at the same time, I also learn about their processes, and make sure that they are processing our waste in accordance with regulations.

I am also working on expanding and diversifying where we send our waste to. Part of my role includes building relationships with companies that use waste to convert into renewable energy.

What does a typical day look like for you?

My day will usually involve regular contact with the operations teams at both the Canford and Somerset sites, communication is key!

I will have a few days here and there where I don’t actually see the office as I am out on site visits learning more about other companies processes, researching new opportunities, or on duty care visits.

When I am in the office and not visiting other companies, I am in and out of meetings, on phone calls with various disposal points and looking at the numbers to make sure we are getting the best value for the waste we are dealing with.

What excites you most about working at Commercial Recycling?

I think there is a lot of opportunity for growth here, that is exciting. There is lots of flexibility with the role too, which allows me to make a difference in my own way, both to the company and to the environment.

What makes Commercial Recycling different?

I think the fact that it is a family run business makes it different. The people are very welcoming, we all get on very well (at the moment ?) .
I also feel that we are all valued here. Those at the top of the hierarchy are approachable and listen to you as an employee, no matter where you are within the company.

Have you got any interesting stories from your time working within industry?

Well as you can imagine, going on so many visits I am bound to have a few good stories.

Once, I went on a site tour with a few other people to look at some muckaway material. It was a wet boggy day and as we were walking around we came to a stop. I wanted to go and have a further look, so I took a step forward and immediately started sinking. My boot got stuck! Naturally this caught me off guard, so I put my left foot down, which inevitably also got stuck. In the end I had to take my foot out of the boot, pull it out of the mud to place it back on solid ground.

Needless to say, the others were all there laughing at me, and I learnt an important lesson that day… Always look where you are about to walk!

How would you describe yourself in 3 words?

I’d like to think …or I am told that I am charismatic.

I also think I am quite positive, thoughtful and caring towards people both in the workplace and outside, I will always put others first.

Tell us something about yourself that not many people know

My biggest achievement, aside from my kids, is completing a full Ironman in Sweden in 2014.

I have also travelled Europe competing in many half Ironman, something I hope to return to once my boys are a little bit older!
