Day in the Life of Janette

A promotion is always a great reason to catch up with someone, so when we found out that Janette had been promoted to Head of Compliance, we used it as a great excuse to get our pen, paper and set of questions out and have a chat.

Janette shared what a typical day usually looks like for her, and a little unknown fact about herself that was impressive when she first told us, but quickly became more impressive as she finished her sentence.

Take a read to find out what she was talking about.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your job

My job title is Head of Compliance for both Commercial Recycling and our partner company Avon Material Supplies, which means that I oversee all the general compliance areas in the companies to guide and help the businesses with whatever compliance requirements are needed.

I have worked for both of the companies for my whole professional life, having started in invoicing and ticket entry and working my way up to deal with the compliance of the companies. In the past 10 years, I have also completed my Waste Management Training & Advisory Board (WAMITAB) certifications too.

Often, I am grateful for my Masters’s Degree in Earth Science from the University of Manchester as it helps with any scientific aspects of my job. I absolutely loved doing my degree, it was, and still is, such an interesting subject (well I thought so anyway!), but instead of selling my soul to the oil industry, I thought recycling would serve the world better. Luckily I had a foot in the door to the recycling industry as my Dad owns Avon Material Supplies and runs Commercial Recycling.

Away from the office, I am a Mummy of two fiercely determined and loving children who are the most amazing things in the world (I might be a little biased here). I sing in the best choir in the South (and we are the best, we have trophies to prove it!), adore skiing and horses and love to travel. Near or far, I want to see as much as I possibly can with my loved ones.

What does a typical day look like for you?

After being woken up by two small humans, I get everyone to where they need to be and get on my way to one of our offices. I mainly work from Canford Recycling Centre but occasionally I go up to Southwood or our other sites when needed.

Most of my day is then spent on various projects I have going at that time, checking waste data, ensuring compliant exit routes for all the waste that is received, site inspections and so much more. My days include lots of office-based work behind the scenes of the recycling process to make sure the companies are meeting compliance targets.

What excites you most about working at CRL?

Working here is brilliant because no day is the same. That is what is so challenging yet rewarding about working in the waste industry.

We have a great team here whom I love working with. We know we have work to do, and we get it done, but there is always a bit of laughter in the air. As a team, we aren’t afraid of a bit of banter, so someone is always having a giggle in the office.

Have you got any interesting stories from your time working here?

I have lots of stories as, as I said earlier, every day is different in the waste industry which allows for a lot to happen, but one occasion certainly sticks out.

It involved the Environment Agency, the Police, two gentlemen from an African nation and a big shipping container of what the gentlemen referred to as ‘products’. The shipment was diverted to our site as we can accept a very wide range of wastes at Canford to be unloaded and consigned to our facility.

I can’t go into too much detail but it’s fair to say the majority of the container was not allowed to be in there. That was quite a day!

What makes CRL different?

The team, for sure. It might seem cliche, but we’re one big work family! It makes a big difference to the company culture and the atmosphere in the office and on the various sites we have.

How would you describe yourself in 3 words?

I would use caring, adaptable and determined.

Tell us something about yourself that not many people know

I was part of my University ski racing team and the ladies’ team came 3rd in the country which was an amazing result – especially bearing in mind how hungover we were!
