Day in the Life of… Kieran

Continuing our Day in the Life series, this month we caught up with Kieran Tracey, our Credit Controller. We learnt what a typical day looks like for him, what 3 words he would use to describe himself and much more…

Tell us a little about yourself and your job

I have worked at Commercial Recycling for 8 years now. I run the credit control department, so my job is to make sure our customers pay us whilst also dealing with any invoice queries that customers may have and I open up new credit accounts.

What does a typical day look like for you?

I am based at Canford Recycling Centre, and I work in the office three days a week and then from home for the other two.

The first job will be to see who has paid for their invoices and who hasn’t. This then gives me a list of people that I need to call to encourage a payment from. As I said before, I am also responsible for answering any queries that customers may have about their invoices, so if I’m not on the phone to discuss their account, then I am often on the phone answering questions.

The other task that I have to complete on a daily basis is reconciling the cash and credit card payments that come in from the products and services sold that day. For example, I need to make sure that we have been paid the right amount by a customer for the services used, or for the amount disposed of at our recycling centres.

What accountancy qualifications do you have?

I am currently working towards becoming a certified accountant and am studying for and sitting the ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) exams. I have been doing this part time, alongside working full time and spending time with my young family.

Not that long ago, I passed exam 11 out of 13. So I only have 2 more exams to go and then I will be a certified Accountant.

What excites you about working for Commercial Recycling?

Well firstly, the work provides a challenge. People are always calling in with new queries and interesting situations. When the tasks get a little repetitive, it is nice to have something different to work with and that gets your brain working.

The other thing is that the office is always full, there are always people to talk to, and we get on well as a team so there is always laughter. The people at Commercial Recycling are a sociable bunch which means there are always people coming in and out of the office. This means that no day is ever the same.

What makes Commercial Recycling different?

We are all very relationship focused, both with other staff members and with our customers, we want to build long lasting relationships. In the office, this means that there isn’t high staff turnover… in fact the only staff changes we really get are additional members for new roles as the company expands.

This is the same with customers too really. We build relationships with our customers so we often become their go to recycling centre or waste management service, meaning that we don’t lose customers but we always gain them. We get to know those that come to us and their needs, so we can provide exceptional service to them.

How would you describe yourself in 3 words?

Organised, motivated and easy going.

To be honest, there isn’t really anything people don’t know. I am an open book, people know me pretty well.
